How do you know if a figure is made of porcelain or bisque?
Buy two figures of flowers and I have someone ask me if they are made of porcelain or soup Seafood? I always thought they were porcelain, they are unglazed, but I always thought painted.I bisque porcelain and were the same thing? Anyway, does anyone know and how to answer your question?
This is a bit like asking if a birdhouse is made of wood or painted – can be both or neither. Bisque (Or cookies) means simply unglazed. Could be unglazed porcelain or unglazed clay. Porcelain is defined by the composition of the paste and the temperature at which fire. As an example, figurines of the most precious moments are Biqsue porcelain but are made from a paste porcelain and fired a cracker finish. After paint that is fired again to seal the color in ceramics, but has not finished with a varnish. Something like a Lladro figure is also usually glazed porcelain, but usually (and therefore no cake). A Hummel is usually made of faience (not porcelain, but other ceramic), but generally is glazed (No seafood soup). The terminology gets a bit confusing because people often exchange words that do not strictly have the same meaning as porcelain, ceramic, porcelain, ceramics. The specific differences of porcelain, soft paste porcelain, hard porcelain, stoneware, clay, etc. are not easy to determine, on a finished figure. I would bet the flowers are made of porcelain but they are glass or soup with a matte finish is impossible to guess by your question. If you know the manufacturer you could probably find how they produce flowers, which should answer the question. Hope this helps and hopefully not too late!
