The Quarter Horse: Faster than a speeding thoroughbred

The Quarter Horse is known as the All-American and as the horse versatile in the world. Not only is the most popular breed in the United States, but is possibly the oldest breed of horses in the U.S.. Named for its incredible speed for a short quarter mile sprint, the fastest gallop of any horse that has been achieved by the American Quarter Horse that was recorded at a speed around 55 mph (88 km / h) in a quarter mile or less. Its immensely powerful hindquarters can push the horse into a gallop almost from scratch, and racing Quarter Horses is becoming increasingly popular. The average Quarter Horse usually 20 years, but 35 years is not uncommon when properly cared for.

It has been called by many names in recent years: American Quarter Horse Foundation, Barrio, Barrio standard district races, Running Quarter, Quarter Miler, horse and cowboy short Horse.

While the breed originated in the United States and is now distributed worldwide, its ancestry back to the Arab, Barb and Turkish horses were imported to America by early Spanish explorers conquerors, and traders. These are combined in the race Chickaswas by Native Americans to form one side of the bloodline, with Thoroughbred horses and on the other. Morgan and Standardbred horses have also been used in the development of the breed. But it is difficult give the exact origin, because the mixing of bloodlines to produce a short horse began in the colonial regions before the War of Independence. The true beginnings are believed to have been in the Carolinas and Virginia, but the development was placed in the southwestern United States, in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, eastern Colorado and Kansas, when in early 1600, the colonists began importing and breeding horses English to native Spanish-based actions to create a horse Chickaswas difficult for all uses.

Of course, naming the horses after the people was a common practice at the time and when the horses were sold their names were changed often. This led to confusion when attempting to verify pedigrees. Today the name of a horse must be acceptable to the American Quarter Horse Association and must not exceed 20 characters. Quarter names can be reused if they meet certain criteria in accordance with AQHA rules.

And not to be given special keep them as a distinct breed, either. fast horses ran in any suitable open space to run many races as "match races" after of a private bet between the owners or drivers. Any of these fast horses who also made good cow horses were crossed with mares available. Many of these mares had a history of Spanish, Arabian, Morgan, or Standardbred.

In 1889, a traveler, a horse of unknown origin, was sent to Texas in a wagon horses but it is believed to have originated in Kentucky. Traveler apparently was not considered valuable and at least once changed hands in a dice game. He and his descendants Fits some excellent mares, and many Quarter horses today can be traced along the paternal side.

Currently there are two basic varieties of the breed. District Foundation, neighborhood or outdated Standard type "Bulldog" is the smallest minor, stocky, muscular more variety, however, extremely agile and sure footed. Used to work in the field, track and driving pleasure, they average 14 to 15 hands and weighing from 900 to 1,100 pounds. The district races, Running quarter is taller, slimmer and looks more like a thoroughbred very muscular due to the added Thoroughbred genes. They average between 15 and 16 hands and weigh between 1,000 and 1,250 pounds and tend to be limited solid colors with white markings.

American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), the largest equine breed registry in the world, and founded in 1940, has recorded more than 5 million American Quarter Horse with the current population estimated at 3.2 million animals.

The race is usually recognized by a short nose, broad forehead with a straight profile and big jaws. It has small ears like a fox and large eyes, wide apart. The neck has a small crest. Their backs are short with good cross and a sloping croup. The barrel is deep with good spring of ribs and hoofs are well rounded, with deep open heels. The following 13 colors are accepted by the AQHA: brown, brown, taupe, brown, red, bay, buckskin, black, Grullo, red roan, blue roan, and palomino, with the chestnut that the most common brands and limited.

The walk, trot, canter and gallop are natural gaits of the horse room. Some people have movements long, long legs with a lot of knee action, while others take shorter steps.

As for the disposition and personality, this horse is the most ready and relaxed, calm and fair to all races, and has a gentle nature. They are fast and agile, balanced and sensible, sure-footed and consistent with good resistance. His unflappable nature has become conducive to the mounted police units in cities. Intelligence, reliability, adaptability and willingness to please their owners that the Quarter easy to train in every way. The race seems to have an innate "cow sense" and can anticipate movements of the cattle that make them indispensable for livestock and cutting.

There is a downside to the race however, a genetic oddity known as Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP). This appears as a genetic defect in AQHA rules, along with Parrot Mouth and cryptorchidism. HYPP is inherited as a trait dominant and characterized by intermittent episodes of uncontrollable muscle tremors (shaking, tremors or muscle contractions) or profound muscle weakness, and in severe cases, can lead to the collapse and / or death. To date, HYPP has been detected only in the offspring of a horse named IMPRESSIVE, # 0767246.

They are in fact a horse used in applications ranging from racing, herding, and the rodeo, show jumping, dressage, carriage and driving pleasure.
