Elizabeth Barrett Browning: A Discussion of How Do I Love?
"How I love you?" Elizabeth Barrett Browning was written in 1845 while she was being courted by the English poet Robert Browning. The poem also titled Sonnet XLIII Sonnets from the Portuguese.
The early experiences
Elizabeth Barrett was born in Durham, England in 1806, the first daughter of affluent parents who owned sugar plantations in Jamaica. He was educated at home and read voraciously in history, philosophy and literature. Young Elizabeth learned Hebrew in order to read original Bible texts and Greek to read the original Greek drama and philosophy. He started writing poems when he was 12 years old, but she did not publish his first collection for another twenty years.
Elizabeth Barrett developed a serious respiratory illness at age 15 and soon after riding accident left her with a spinal cord injury serious. These two health problems remained with her all her life.
In 1828 his mother died and four years later the family business and its faltering father sold Durham's farm and moved the family to a coastal village. He was stern, protective, and even tyrannical and forbid any of their children to marry. In 1833 Elizabeth published his first work, a translation of Prometheus Bound by the Greek playwright Aeschylus.
A few years later the family moved to London. His father Elizabeth began to send younger siblings to Jamaica to help with the family business. Elizabeth was distressed because she openly opposed slavery in Jamaica and plantation of the family and did not want his brothers were fired.
Principles of writing
In 1838 Elizabeth Barrett wrote and published The Seraphim and Other Poems. The collection took the form of a classical Greek tragedy and expressed her deep Christian sentiments.
Soon after, Elizabeth's poor health led her to move to Italy, accompanied by her beloved brother Edward, who is referred to as "brother." Unfortunately, drowned a year later in a boating accident and Elizabeth returned to London, seriously ill, emotionally broken and hopeless grief affected. She became alone over the next five years, confining herself to her bedroom.
She continued to write poetry, however, published a collection in 1844 simply titled, Poems. It was also published in the United States with an introduction by Edgar Allan Poe. In one of the poems that praised one of the works of Robert Browning, who won his attention. He wrote back to her, expressing his admiration for poetry.
Robert Browning
In the next twenty months Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning exchanged 574 letters. Admiration, respect and love for each other grew and flourished. In 1845, Robert Browning, Elizabeth sent a telegram saying: "I love your verses with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett I, as I say, love these books with all my heart -.. and I love you too "A few months later the two met and fell in love.
Inspired by her love for Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett wrote the 44 love poems that were collected in Sonnets from the Portuguese and were finally published in 1850. His growing love for Robert and his ability to express their emotions sonnets and love poems allowed Elizabeth to escape the oppression of his father and the depression of the prison.
His father strongly opposed the relationship she maintained her affair secret for as long as possible. The couple eloped in 1846 and his father never forgave her or spoke with her later.
Move to Italy
Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her husband, Robert, went to Pisa, Italy and soon settled in Florence where he spent the rest of his life, with occasional visits to London. Soon Elizabeth's health improved enough to give birth to the couple's only son, Robert.
In 1850 he published Sonnets from the Portuguese. Some have speculated that the title was chosen to hide the personal nature of the sonnets and to imply that the collection was a translation of earlier works. However, the pet name of Robert de Elizabeth was "my little Portuguese," a reflection on Elizabeth's darker, mediterranean complexion, possibly inherited Jamaica ties of family.
While living in Florence, Elizabeth Barrett Browning published three major works. Italy went to political issues and some other unpopular issues such as slavery, child labor, male domination, and the right of women to intellectual freedom. Although his popularity waned as a result of these elections, it was read and heard and recognized throughout Europe. He died in Florence in 1861.
The poem, "How I love you?"
Sonnet XLIII, "How I love you not?" Is probably the most popular of Elizabeth Barrett Browning love poem. He is sincere, romantic, affectionate, elegant and simple. It is also quite memorable.
The love poem begins with the question: "How I love you?" and proceeds to count the ways. His spirituality Christian bears witness that loves Robert "to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach." then professes seven more ways that she loves Robert. His " passion put to use in my sorrows of age "refers to the depth of his despair before. The love that" I seemed to lose with my lost saints "is refers to the lost love of his mother and brother.
The love poem ends with the statement that the time and death will not diminish his love for Robert because "If God choose, I love you, but better after death. "
How I love you
How I love you? Let me count the ways.
I I love you with the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the purpose of being and ideal grace.
I love you with the level of everyday
Most need silence, sun and candlelight.
I love you freely, as men strive for Right;
I love you purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love you with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love you with love seemed to lose
With my lost saints, – I love you with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of my entire life – and, if God choose,
I love you, but better after death.
