Tha Kansas State Fair
Kansas State Fair is like a whole world in itself. Just west of Wichita forty minutes of the show is near the best small town in Kansas.
It's easy to get lost in time and space, while wandering around the 280 acres of property, buildings, walks, streets and commercial vendors. So much to see and lots to do everything you can not possibly be made into a single output.
Arrive early morning in the first order week. That is the best time to see all the different animals long before or shortly after they are judged. There are many different varieties cows. More than one breed of goat (My personal favorite among mammals), sheep, and many beautiful horses. Even llamas, or alpaca as those in the show are called, make their appearance.
After the buildings are a temporary home for these mammals to birds have some real estate on their own. Inside the rabbit and poultry complex are birds of many different varieties and very interesting. There are also ducks, geese and pigeons of lots of different sizes and shapes. Never knew there were so many different types of rabbits.
The street is that Kansas can be proud. Full of attractions for all ages and tolerances. High fear of some, the super quick turn slow and easy rides for the more docile souls. There are plenty of games to win prizes, cotton candy to eat, a fun house and more.
If competition is the game you find a lot of that in the Kansas State Fair.
A building dedicated to the domestic arts is full of beautiful hand made quilts of all sizes, bakers, knitting and sewing projects all competing for first prize blue ribbon. There are demonstrations kitchen too.
There are competitions for livestock. The beasts are groomed and pampered to look your best then paraded before the judges and the public to be admired. Who has the best looking cow, sheep, goat or chicken, even. Whatever. Some animals are very beautiful to see here.
4-H is a big part of the Kansas State Fair. Young people learn about animal husbandry, agriculture and life. A very good program. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts make their presence felt too.
Kansas is a big agricultural state so there are plenty of vehicles to be judged. Can not forget wheat in Kansas. You can learn about all the wheat at the fair. Where it comes from, how it is harvested and what it is used. Yes, wheat is a big deal in Kansas. Not just wheat, lot of different crops are on display here and there is much to learn about them.
When hunger is not difficult to find a good place to eat. Food vendors of all kinds are strategically located near the fairgrounds to ensure no one goes hungry while enjoying the fun.
One thing I do not want to forget when it comes to the fair is a good pair of walking shoes. So much to do and see what is on your feet all day racing from one thing to another cold. While there are plenty of places to sit in the shade and the rest, you want to be sure not to miss any of the fun!
Kansas State Fair is only one greatest thing about Wichita Kansas.
